P.S.Y. 2010: Psych Scene for You

The event will feature talks by renowned practitioners in various sub-fields of psychology such as Gitanjali Goyal Khanna (Clinical Psychology), Jennifer Teoh (Forensic Psychology), Ben Ho and Kirby Chua (Counselling Psychology) and Kheng Hean Foo (Positive Psychology).

Ticket sales for SIM students (one session only):

Event Title: Paid research opportunity for students

Researchers:

Associate Professor Norman Li & Assistant Professor Daniel Balliet, Singapore Management University

Time/Date

Experiment sessions are scheduled between 20 March and 3 April 2010.  Students who are interested to participate in the study should sign up for a slot via www.epsychlab.com

Sessions Available:

20 March- 2.30pm, 5pm, and 7.30pm

27 March- 1pm, 3.30 pm, and 6.30pm

3 April- 2.30pm, 5pm, and 7.30 pm

Venue:

Singapore Management University, School of Social Sciences

Requirements:

To qualify, participants must not be currently married. Females must be between 18 to 24 years old while males should be between 20 to 26 years old.

Components:

a) Participants will be required to answer several questions on mate preferences via the website.

b) For the second part of the study, participants will have to take part in any one of the above mentioned session. The session will be similar to that of a speed dating session whereby participants have to chat with other participants attending the session.

Remuneration:

Participants will be paid $15.00 for completing the study.

The speakers will share their experiences and findings in their areas of research such as dating and interpersonal relationships.

Attendees may also query the speakers in our Q&A session.

Speakers:

Professor Norman Li is an Associate Professor with SMU. He attained his PhD in Social Psychology from Arizona State University and has vast experience in areas of research such as dating and Evolutionary Psychology. He is known as the ‘love guru’ and has made numerous media appearances.

Professor Daniel Balliet is an Assistant professor with SMU. He achieved his PhD in Experimental Psychology from Washington State University. His areas of research interests include cooperation, social dilemmas, self-regulation and social value orientation. He has also provided professional service for Personality and Individual Differences and European Journal of Personality.

Movie Screening: “I Am Sam”

“I Am Sam” tells the story of Sam Dawson, a father who is affected by a type of psychological disorder, mental retardation, with significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior. Follow this heart-warming movie about life, and love.

Hope 2010 has been good for all of you so far!

We are proud to bring you Successful Teens Achieving Reality (STAR) Academy, a mentoring/coaching program.

Aim:
To empower teens with coping skills to achieve better results in their life.

What is it about?
Coaching teens on life skills, study skills, and proactive decision-making within a supportive environment.

Who:
Psychology students (have taken PSY 101 – Introduction to Psychology, or equivalent)

Supervisors: Ms Marion Neubronner and Dr Reena (UB Lecturers)

Coaching will take place in Mayflower Secondary School and St Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School.

Maximum intake: 20 people

Training period (to be a coach): 12 Feb to 12 March 2010 (Kindly refer to the attachment for details)
Coaching Period: 8 March to end of April (Dates are dependent on both our availability and the secondary schools’ needs)
Venue: mostly SIM for trainings and the secondary schools for coaching

Volunteering Opportunity @ IMH

During December, we will be organizing a volunteering program at IMH, through The Achievers, Friends of IMH. The Achievers is a non-profit, non-religious volunteer group established in 1999, whose primary focus is on IMH’s patients. Their mission is to give care and love, to develop social skills and to improve general knowledge.

Date: 17, 18, 21, 22, 23 Dec (check doc attachment for further info about planned programme for the 5 days)

Time: 10-12 pm

Venue: IMH

Beneficiaries: Special Friends

Age group of Special Friends: 20-60 year olds

Transportation: no transportation will be given. *

*Meeting place and time will be confirmed at a later date, so after registering through the student portal, do drop us an email (events.psysociety@gmail.com) so that we can contact you about the details.

Orientation: We are trying to set up a One hour orientation that will brief us on the do’s and don’ts, what to expect, etc. **

How to register using the SIM Student portal:

1. Log-in to the SIM student portal.
2. Click on the “CCA” Tab on the bottom-left corner.
3. Select “Registration of Activity”.
4. 3 drop-down tabs should show up. Under “CCA Type”, select “Special Interest”, under “Club Name”, select “Psychology Society”, click the “SEARCH” tab. Please do note that this is to be done in sequence and there will be a slight load-up time in between each selection.
5. A table will show up. Select “Volunteer with The Achievers“. Locate the “Register Now” column and check the box in it. Following that, click the “REGISTER” tab.
6. A small window will open and ask if you want to register for the event. click “OK”.
7. You are now registered! 🙂
