Psychology is both a discipline and a profession that is highly based on scientific research and professional practice; therefore psychologists are both scientists and professionals. Through research, underlying principles about human and animal behavior is learnt and understood whilst in practice, psychologists apply knowledge and concepts gained from research and at the same time, discover new results for further research study.
According to the Singapore Psychological Society, a professionally qualified psychologist is defined as one who has “obtained a postgraduate qualification in a specialized field in psychology from a recognized academic institution, with supervised practical training in a variety of settings”. A first degree in which psychology is the sole or major subject is insufficient for professional recognition as psychologist in many parts of the world. Hence, it is imperative for aspiring students in the relevant undergraduate programs to be connected and familiar with authentic research and internship opportunities in the field of Psychology.
